Overview
Gemini from Google is a generative AI tool and conversational assistant capable of processing text, code, audio, images, and video for a wide range of tasks.
Harvard Google Gemini licenses include access to:
Basic tier (available to all Harvard Google Workspace users):
- Gemini Chat: Conversational AI for general questions and search, brainstorming, summarization and editing, translation, data analysis and general text / code generation.
- Source-grounded research (Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM): Create up to 200 notebooks, each with up to 200 sources (up to 500K words/200MB per source), with up to 200 daily chat prompts to generate summaries, audio/video overviews, quizzes, flashcards, and reports grounded strictly in your source documents.
- Web-based deep research: Live web integration for synthesized web searches, reference gathering, and research summaries.
- Custom assistants (Skills) and Gemini Canvas: Create, use, and share modular instructions (Skills) using slash commands within any chat, and collaborate in side-by-side interactive workspaces (Gemini Canvas) to draft, refine, and prototype coding projects, docs, study guides, and presentations.
- Image and multimedia generation: Create and edit images and generate short music tracks.
- Google Workspace extensions: Gemini in Docs, Slides, Forms, and Vids, and connect Gemini to apps including Docs, Drive, and Keep.
Premium tier: Google AI Pro for Education (by request at additional cost):
- Includes everything in the Basic tier, plus: a 1 million-token context window (vs. 32,000), priority access to Thinking and Pro models, up to 20 Deep Research reports per day, video generation, scheduled actions, and GitHub connections. Gemini Notebook limits increase to 500 notebooks with 300 sources each and 500 daily chat prompts. Adds Gemini in Gmail, Drive, Meet, and Chat, plus additional features in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
Access to connectors and plugins: Gemini can integrate with other tools and services via “connectors” to read data and perform tasks. All connectors must be reviewed and approved for security and privacy compliance before being enabled. View a full list of connectors that have been approved for use with Harvard Gemini.
Eligibility
Faculty, staff, and researchers in FAS, College, DCE, SEAS; Students in FAS, College, DCE*, GSAS, SEAS, HBS, HLS
Central Administration, GSE, HBS, HDS, HKS, and HMS (Quad), and HSPH require local approval for Google Workspace account requests.
*Extension admitted degree and premedical programs only
Not included
- API keys: If you need an API key for programmatic use, request access to the Gemini API through Harvard's API Platform.
- Google AI Studio and third-party extensions requiring external data sharing are not included.
Limitations
- Subject to model rate limits and context length constraints per session.
- AI tools are constantly changing and adding new features. Most new features require security and privacy review before they are enabled in Harvard tools. If a feature has been publicly announced by a vendor, it may not be immediately available.
Privacy and security
- Standard Products are approved for work using up to Level 3 confidential data.
- Agent is approved for tasks involving up to Level 3 confidential data providing you actively monitor autonomous sessions.
- Data you enter will not be used to train Google models.
- Harvard cannot access data from user sessions.
- Not approved for use with Level 4 confidential data, including HIPAA, FERPA, and PHI
