HUIT prepares for operating system upgrades

To ensure Harvard’s computing environment remains secure and up to date, HUIT is preparing for upcoming changes to operating system support. As part of the normal lifecycle of their platforms, Microsoft and Apple have announced the end of support for Windows 10 and macOS Ventura (13.x) or earlier. In response, HUIT is partnering with Schools and Units to update affected computers and maintain compliance with current security standards.

HUIT-managed computers that cannot be updated will need to be recycled, disconnected from the network, or replaced. HUIT will work with Schools and Units to determine the best course of action, including whether to request a security exception to keep older devices in service with enhanced protections.

This upgrade cycle also brings a more consistent experience for macOS and Windows users, including:

  • Timely desktop notifications for required updates
  • The ability to defer updates up to 14 times
  • Automatic pause of upgrade prompts during active video conferencing or screensharing

Updating to the latest macOS and Windows operating systems ensures that devices receive the latest security patches and comply with industry privacy standards. Additionally, new operating systems offer some enhanced features:

  • Windows 11: Faster performance, modernized interface, and refreshed apps such as Media Player, Photos, and Snipping Tool.
  • macOS Tahoe: Live audio transcription in the Notes app, enhanced Privacy and Security settings, and other user experience improvements.

If you have questions or need help, you can contact the HUIT Service Desk or your school’s local IT support.
