Advisory on phishing emails: "Free musical instruments"

Some members of the Harvard community have reported receiving phishing emails with subject lines that are variations on “Enjoy Complimentary Musical Instruments!”

These fraudulent emails appear to come from a legitimate Harvard email address and usually include messages saying that somebody is retiring and is offering free musical instruments in exchange for paying delivery costs. The emails are an attempt to scam interested parties by encouraging them to transfer money via an online service (e.g. Zelle and Venmo).

What should I do?

  • If you receive one of these emails, please forward it to phishing@harvard.edu and delete it from your inbox or use the “Report” button in your Outlook toolbar.
  • If you are concerned that you may have been affected by one of these emails, please contact HUIT.
