OpenAI will retire Custom GPT functionality in ChatGPT
Beginning October 25, 2026, OpenAI is replacing the Custom GPT functionality in ChatGPT with plugins. Like a custom GPT, plugins can bring reusable instructions, reference files, and connected apps together.
If you have created a Custom GPT that you want to continue using, you must migrate it to a plugin before February 11, 2027. After this date, the Custom GPT functionality will be retired and existing Custom GPTs that have not been migrated will no longer be accessible.
What do I need to do?
If you have an existing Custom GPT that you want to continue using:
- Beginning October 1, there will be a Migrate to plugin button in the GPTs section of the navigation pane.
- Select Migrate to plugin and follow the prompts to convert your GPT to a plugin. For more detailed instructions, read this OpenAI help article.
Note: Migrating doesn’t carry over your Custom GPT’s sharing settings. To share a plug-in after you have migrated and tested it, follow these instructions.
If you no longer want / need your Custom GPT:
- You do not need to take any action.
If you want to create a new Custom GPT:
- To ensure continued access, we recommend using the new plugin functionality instead of creating a new Custom GPT.
- Follow these instructions to learn more about creating a custom plugin
