# OpenAI will retire Custom GPT functionality in ChatGPT

September 30, 2026

Beginning October 25, 2026, OpenAI is replacing the Custom GPT functionality in ChatGPT with plugins. Like a custom GPT, plugins can bring reusable instructions, reference files, and connected apps together.

**If you have created a Custom GPT that you want to continue using, you must migrate it to a plugin before February 11, 2027.** After this date, the Custom GPT functionality will be retired and existing Custom GPTs that have not been migrated will no longer be accessible.

## What do I need to do?

### If you have an existing Custom GPT that you want to continue using:

- Beginning October 1, there will be a **Migrate to plugin** button in the **GPTs** section of the navigation pane.
- Select **Migrate to plugin** and follow the prompts to convert your GPT to a plugin. [For more detailed instructions, read this OpenAI help article](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/migrate-custom-gpts#for-gpt-creators-prepare-your-gpt).
**Note**: Migrating doesn’t carry over your Custom GPT’s sharing settings. To share a plug-in after you have migrated and tested it, [follow these instructions](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001256-plugins-in-chatgpt-and-codex#share-a-plugin-you-own).

### If you no longer want / need your Custom GPT:

- You do not need to take any action.

### If you want to create a new Custom GPT:

- To ensure continued access, we recommend using the new plugin functionality instead of creating a new Custom GPT.
- [Follow these instructions to learn more about creating a custom plugin](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/build-plugins)
